With Mass Shootings on the Rise, Is Your Community Morgue Prepared?
We Can No Longer Say “It Will Never Happen Here”
The increase in mass shootings over the last 10 years has not only caused the loss of human life, it has caused communities to do more to prepare for these emergency situations. During the aftermath of mass shootings, we often hear, “I never thought it would happen here.”
There have been 17 mass shootings since 2008, compared to 16 mass shootings in the 58 years between 1949 and 2007.¹
Shootings in the last 10 years have taken place in schools, churches, concert venues, movie theatres, nightclubs and restaurants, leaving nearly 300 dead. ¹
Of the 17 mass shootings since 2008, seven have happened in cities with a population less than 3,000 and 10 have taken place in cities with fewer than 32,000 people. More than half of the mass shootings since 2008 have occurred in small cities, while five have been in cities with a population of 200,000 or more.
It has become clear that mass shootings can take place anywhere. We can no longer say, “it will never happen here.”
As a result, emergency personnel, schools and businesses around the country train for active shooter incidents. Our communities also need to prepare for the worst – mass casualties. If a mass shooting happened in your city or town, how would officials manage the considerable number of victims’ bodies? Would your morgue have the space to handle a mass casualty situation?
Hazmat Medical Associates Mobile Morgue Trailers from MED Alliance are designed to help in these situations. Trailers can be used at the scene for transporting the victims’ bodies to the morgue or used to accommodate overcapacity at the morgue. With stainless steel body trays, morgue trailers are equipped with an electric generator and refrigerator, so coroners and medical examiners can be confident their standards, best practices and most importantly the bodies left in their care are not compromised.
Trailers can be rented or purchased. Rented trailers are 8’x8’x24’ pods with convenient folding racks and 24 body trays. Those available for purchase have folding racks, 20 body trays and a dual-axle trailer attached to the 8’x8’x16’ pod for transporting the pod to and from scenes.
Ensure your community morgue is prepared to handle a mass casualty incident with a morgue trailer from MED Alliance.
