There are multiple reasons for ventilator circuit disconnects; common reasons include sending a patient for a chest CT or transferring the patient from the ER to the ICU. Circuit disconnects are often thought of as brief or infrequent, but with each disconnect, the patient’s lungs are put at risk of injury from collapse and re-expansion. Studies confirm abrupt deflation after sustained inflation can cause acute lung injury.
How do you maintain PEEP and protect the patient’s lungs when disconnects are necessary?
Preventing Lung Injury During the Circuit Disconnect
Join Solutions in Critical Care and its partners as Frank Fiorenza RRT, BHSc, FCSRT presents: PEEP Stabilization During Mechanical Ventilation at 11 am CST on May 11, 2022.
Frank will discuss current CDC and AARC guidelines as well as share clinical data, case studies and research about the importance of maintaining PEEP and keeping a closed circuit during mechanical ventilation. Learn how to safely keep a closed circuit in almost every patient scenario to maintain PEEP and protect yourself from exhaled aerosols using the Flusso By Pass and Flusso TFI adapters.
Pre-registration is required to attend. Registered attendees will receive a confirmation email with a link to join the webinar.
About the Presenter
Frank Fiorenza is a Registered Respiratory Therapist and has been a Staff RT in the Intensive Care Units of The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa Heart Institute for more than 19 years. Currently, he holds the position of Product Development Manager at McArthur Medical Sales Inc. Alongside his clinical work, Frank is an inventor and holds 18 international patents and patents pending for various devices related to respiratory therapy. With the development of these devices, he has also won 2 international medical device design awards. He currently holds a diploma in Respiratory Therapy from Algonquin College, Bachelor of Health Science from Thompson University and has been awarded the designation of FCSRT with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists. Frank has research published in the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery, Respiratory Therapy Magazine and the Canadian Journal of Respiratory, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.
Frank invented the Flusso By Pass and Flusso TFI for safer circuit disconnects. Both adapters allow for the temporary interruption of gas flow to maintain a patient’s PEEP and minimize potential exhaled aerosols during ventilator circuit disconnect, enhancing patient and staff safety. For more information about the Flusso By Pass or Flusso TFI, call 888-891-1200 or email us to be connected to a local representative.
