How the ButterflyBVM™ Compares to Traditional BVMs: You’ll Want to See This!
This article is a summary of a study published in Resuscitation Plus, “Measuring ventilation in pediatric simulations using a novel adjustable bag-valve-mask resuscitator” by Baluyot et al. The study explores how the ButterflyBVM™ from Compact Medical compares to traditional BVMs during simulated pediatric resuscitations. Read the full article here.
Study Objective
The study aimed to determine whether the ButterflyBVM, a novel adjustable resuscitator, improves ventilation accuracy compared to a traditional BVM. Specifically, researchers evaluated minute ventilation (MV) and tidal volume (Vt) delivery during pediatric simulations.
Participants
- 42 clinicians: physicians, nurses, and EMTs
- All had pediatric airway training (PALS or PEPP certified)
- Simulations involved infant (11 kg) and adolescent (43 kg) mannequins in realistic resuscitation scenarios.
Methods
Participants ventilated pediatric mannequins using both devices in randomized order. The ButterflyBVM was preset to appropriate tidal volume and peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) limits. No prior instruction was given on its use to test intuitiveness.
Results
- Minute Ventilation Accuracy:
- ButterflyBVM: 73.8% within target range
- Traditional BVM: 32.1% within target range
- Odds Ratio: 10.5 (p < 0.0001)
- Tidal Volume Delivery:
- ButterflyBVM delivered significantly lower and safer Vt (LSMean = –164.3 mL; p < 0.0001).
The ButterflyBVM™ At-A-Glance
Take the Guesswork Out of Every Breath
The ButterflyBVM from Compact Medical is the world’s first three-in-one bag-valve-mask (BVM) designed to solve the problem of hyperventilation during BVM resuscitation.
A single-use device, the ButterflyBVM has an internal O2 reservoir that provides built-in rate control. It also features an adjustable tidal volume that can be set according to the patient’s size and a PIP dial to give caregivers unprecedented control over the pressures they deliver to patients without the need for a manometer. Why ButterflyBVM Performed Better
Traditional BVMs lack controls for volume, rate, and pressure, often leading to volutrauma or barotrauma, especially in pediatrics. ButterflyBVM addresses these issues with:
- Adjustable tidal volume control
- Adjustable pop-off valve for PIP
- Rate-limiting reinflation mechanism
The ButterflyBVM design allows clinicians to quickly set safe parameters for infants, children, and adults, reducing variability and risk during high-stress scenarios.
Conclusion
The ButterflyBVM significantly improved ventilation accuracy and safety compared to traditional BVMs in simulated pediatric resuscitations. Its intuitive design and adjustable settings make it a promising solution for both hospital and prehospital environments. Further real-world studies are needed, but early evidence suggests ButterflyBVM could help prevent ventilation-related injuries and improve outcomes in pediatric emergencies.
