The Power to Prevent IV Restarts in Children with Difficult Access: Orchid SRV™

Protecting the Line Means Protecting the Patient and the Experience

Peripheral intravenous catheter insertion is a common practice in hospitalized patients, with many clinicians considering it a routine task. However, for some patients, multiple attempts are made to insert the catheter, creating an extremely unpleasant experience, especially for children.

Studies have indicated that more than half of pediatric patients require two attempts, with some requiring 10 attempts or more to complete PIVC insertion. [1], [2]

Understandably, multiple attempts at PIVC insertion can be painful and stressful, leading children to report that it is the most painful hospital procedure.[3]

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing examined the emotional and logistical challenges families encounter when dealing with difficult intravenous access in children. The study concluded that multiple attempts at establishing IV access not only cause discomfort but can increase anxiety and damage the trust in the overall care experience.[4]

Unfortunately, to make matters worse, complications with pediatric PIVCs are common after insertion, with dislodgement being a frequent issue.  [5], [6]

Dislodgement is a concern with any intravenous catheter. However, in cases where patients have experienced multiple insertion attempts, it is crucial to prevent dislodgement and unscheduled IV restarts.

That is where the Orchid SRV™ (Safety Release Valve) comes in.

Break Away from the Pain of IV Dislodgements and Restarts with the Orchid SRV

The Orchid SRV from Linear Health Sciences is a tension-activated breakaway safety release valve designed to reduce the risk of IV catheter failure and replacement in patients two weeks and older.

The sterile, single-patient use connector enables needle-free access. It is positioned between the existing IV extension set and general IV tubing connection intended for fluid delivery to and from the IV catheter.

The Orchid SRV can be used during direct injection, intermittent infusion, continuous infusion and blood transfusion. When tension across the device exceeds a predetermined threshold, the device separates into two halves, activating valves that create sterile seals for the fluid pathway, with the goal of retaining IV site integrity. The Orchid SRV helps prevent up to 91.9% of IV dislodgements due to pull force.

The Orchid SRV minimizes unnecessary IV restarts, allowing for a fast, simple and clean return to treatment. Help prevent the pain, discomfort and distress of IV restarts and enhance patient satisfaction. Use the Orchid SRV. Every Line. Every Time.
