Peripheral intravenous catheter insertion is a common practice in hospitalized patients, with many clinicians considering it a routine task. However, for some patients, multiple attempts are made to insert the catheter, creating an extremely unpleasant experience, especially for children.

Studies have indicated that more than half of pediatric patients require two attempts, with some requiring 10 attempts or more to complete PIVC insertion. ^{[1], [2]}

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing examined the emotional and logistical challenges families encounter when dealing with difficult intravenous access in children.
