Better Oxygenation During Deep I.V. Sedation: Using AERIS Airway™ with Propofol and OPA/NPAs

Respiratory complications are the most common adverse event during deep sedation, with studies indicating that 40 – 70% of patients receiving sedation may experience hypoxia. To address this common issue, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) guidelines recommend monitoring end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO₂) during moderate and deep sedation.

However, current ETCO₂ monitoring methods during sedation often prove to be unreliable.

The AERIS Airway™ from Airway Innovations transforms standard oropharyngeal (OPAs) and nasopharyngeal (NPAs) airways into advanced dual-function systems. The advanced AERIS airways provide better oxygenation while capturing reliable ETCO₂ data in real-time, enabling clinicians to detect respiratory compromise before it becomes a serious issue.

    Better Oxygenation. Safer Airway Management.

Unlike traditional setups, AERIS design offsets the oxygen delivery port from the CO₂ detection port. This allows for accurate ETCO₂ monitoring at the supraglottis with minimal oxygen dilution, resulting in a clear, reliable waveform on standard capnography monitors while maintaining a smooth laminar oxygen flow through the airway device.

The AERIS can deliver high concentrations of oxygen efficiently, achieving up to 80% FiO₂ at low rates and up to 100% at moderate flow rates. By optimizing oxygen delivery and reducing dilution, clinicians can maintain adequate oxygenation while using less oxygen overall.

The AERIS Airway™ sets a new standard in deep I.V. sedation and TIVA procedures by improving oxygenation and patient safety.

Key Features of the AEIRS Airway™

    • Simultaneously delivers oxygen and captures reliable ETCO₂ data in real time
    • Minimizes oxygen dilution for more accurate CO₂ waveform monitoring
    • Delivers up to 80% FiO₂ at 2–4 L/min and up to 100% at 6–10 L/min
    • Fits 95% of adult Guedel OPAs and NPAs
    • Promotes efficient oxygenation with lower overall oxygen use
    • Supports earlier detection of respiratory compromise
    • Modernizes standard airway devices without adding complexity
