Warmth Where It Matters Most: The Preemie Beenie™ by Respiralogics
According to the CDC, more than 9,000 babies are born in US hospitals per day.¹ Keeping newborns warm, especially preterm and low birth weight (LBW) babies, is critical during their first days of life.
Preterm and LBW infants are at a higher risk of hypothermia because their heads account for a significant percentage of their total body surface area, which leads to rapid heat loss. Additionally, their lack of body fat provides inadequate insulation and their thinner skin allows for even more heat loss. These infants lose heat very quickly and often struggle to generate enough warmth on their own, which can lead to serious complications. Much of a newborn’s heat loss occurs through the head, making it essential to address this issue early in their care.
A quality improvement study focused on low birth weight and late-preterm infants showed that implementing specific preventative measures, such as using head covers, significantly reduced the rate of hypothermia in the first hours after birth.²
This evidence highlights that actions to protect and manage heat loss, especially around the head, can improve early warmth outcomes for vulnerable infants.
A Targeted Solution for Cranial Heat Loss
The Preemie Beenie™ Poly-lined Cotton Knit Hat from Respiralogics is specifically designed to help reduce this heat loss. The Preemie Beenie uses a Polyurethane liner placed between two soft knit layers to create a barrier that keeps the heat in. The fabric stretches around the infant’s head for a snug and comfortable fit.
The Preemie Beenie comes in three sizes based on gestational age, making it easier to choose the right size for each infant. Color coding allows for quick size verification. The Beenie is made with latex-free and DEHP-free materials and is indicated for single-patient use.
The Preemie Beenie complements the respiratory care portfolio from Respiralogics, supporting early warmth as a part of comprehensive neonatal care.
