Jonathan Merrell and Adam Scott co-founded the company in 2016 with a mission of improving CPR to save lives. Since that time, they have developed a truly unique product, the world’s first three-in-one bag-valve-mask (BVM) that helps solve the problem of hyperventilation during BVM resuscitation.

Merrell and Scott point out that although hyperventilation is prevalent when BVMs are used, very little has changed with the design and engineering of BVMs since their invention in the 1950s.

“The problem with traditional bag-valve-masks is that they rely on the caregiver’s skills to ensure they are properly operated,” said Merrell. “There is very little built into traditional BVMs to help control the volumes, pressures or rates at which patients receive breaths. It is common for patients to receive too much air.”

The ButterflyBVM helps the caregiver deliver the breath the way it is supposed to be done. Its settings can be easily adjusted to select maximum pressures and volume ranges, allowing medical personnel to deliver air in accordance with established guidelines.

“The ButterflyBVM is truly unique with an internal O2 reservoir that inflates more slowly than traditional BVMs, offering built-in rate control,” said MED Alliance Group President Mike Schroeder. “And the fact that this one device can be used on neonates, infants, peds and adults means less clutter for emergency services and a more efficient response.
