STOP! Is Your Facility Using Wet Ice in Cardboard, Foam or Beverage Coolers to Transport Blood?

Every hospital blood bank uses some type of blood cooler to transfer and/or deliver blood and blood products. Unfortunately, many of these off-the-shelf solutions are inconsistent, require bulky pack-outs and are a pain to validate.

The sensitive nature of biologics means that they must be stored at precise temperatures to maintain viability and prevent degradation. Blood products require different temperatures such as refrigerated for pRBCs, cooling to refrigerated for frozen or thawed plasma and controlled room temperature for platelets.

These valuable and highly perishable lifesaving products should not be packed in your typical recreational cooler.  In fact, using these types of coolers can result in 5-25% in blood wastage, costing hospitals and facilities millions of dollars per year. Further, storage options involving the use of wet ice in cardboard, foam or beverage coolers are not validated to transport blood and can result in blood wastage.

The MaxPlus Blood Coolers are designed and validated specifically for the transport and storage of blood products. They are perfect for in-hospital use, stat transport, transfusion deliveries, lab specimen pick-ups and more.  The MaxPlus coolers are optimized for packed red cells, whole blood, platelets, plasma, specimens, tissue and organs. All with no special handling or bench-time conditioning. The pre-validated MaxPlus blood coolers with simple pack-outs and instructions can be issued in a matter of seconds.

The turnkey MaxQ blood coolers contain temperature control elements (gel packs) that regulate temperature of the blood products within strict tolerances. Purpose designed solutions comprise highly efficient validated systems for Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) coolers (validated for up to 12 hours); OR Coolers and Emergency Transport (EMT) coolers that are validated up to 24 hours.

The result is a safer product with almost zero risk of product loss. Thus, leading to patient safety first, cost and performance-optimized transfusion blood supply chain. MaxPlus Blood Coolers are designed and manufactured in the US and provide an economical, efficient, and sustainable solution for transporting biologics.
