MiDI was born from a NICU nurse’s clinical experience in caring for premature infants. Barb O’Rourke, RN-NIC, C-ELBW, TIP, developed the Milk Drop Intervention to help mitigate the negative oral experiences these infants endure during routine NICU care. She led the IRB-approved Milk Drop Study, which resulted in nine of 10 subject groups having a shorter length of stay in the NICU, the most significant seen in the smallest and most fragile infants. However, to offer the Milk Drop intervention, nurses would use generic pacifiers that completely cover the infant’s face. The pacifier would need to be moved or removed to deliver the milk drops. Every intervention was different, with constant interruptions.

O’Rourke invented the MiDI Milk Drop Soother and Milk Drop Adaptor as the first pre-feeding tools engineered to enable NICU caregivers to deliver the Milk Drop Intervention in a consistent manner while allowing the infant to naturally practice and safely enjoy sucking and swallowing milk droplets. There are no interruptions, and the caregiver remains in complete control.
