Enhancing the Standard of Care for In-Hospital Transports

To provide a higher standard of care, many hospitals have moved away from providing manual ventilation during in-hospital transport and have incorporated the use of portable ventilators.

Studies have shown portable ventilators are more consistent and efficient than manual ventilation. Portable ventilators enable clinicians to better maintain tidal volumes and airway pressure while minimizing the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury.1

While there are multiple portable ventilators for hospitals to choose from, not all portable ventilators are created equal.

The American Association for Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend portable ventilators have a sufficient portable power supply for the duration of transport, have independent control of tidal volume and respiratory frequency, provide full ventilatory support as in assist-control or intermittent mechanical ventilation (not necessarily both), deliver a constant volume in the face of changing pulmonary impedance, monitor airway pressure, provide a disconnect alarm, be capable of providing PEEP, and provide an FIO2 of 1.0.2

Many portable ventilators meet these recommended guidelines; however, caregivers expect and need a high-performing, long-lasting portable ventilator with more functionality.

THE VENTWAY SPARROW MRI PORTABLE TURBINE VENTILATOR

The Inovytec Ventway Sparrow MRI from Solutions in Critical Care is a portable turbine ventilator that offers a unique combination of high performance and functionality in a compact design.

MRI compatible, up to 3 Tesla, the Ventway Sparrow MRI has advanced capabilities to match all in-hospital transport scenarios. The ventilator can be used in adult and pediatric patients weighing more than 11 pounds. Ventilation modes include SIMV-VC-PS, SIMV-PC and CPAP. FDA approval is pending for the HFNC and CPR modes. The Ventway Sparrow MRI is impact-resistant and easy to carry and handle. It is lightweight, weighing only 1.3 kg, and compact (165 x 167 x 60 mm). The Ventway’s size is a great advantage, especially for transfers requiring multiple pieces of equipment.

Easy to use and intuitive, the Ventway Sparrow MRI is maintenance-free, requiring only a periodical filter replacement. The device comes standard with a filter, AC/DC power adapter as well as a rechargeable battery. Adjustable and effective mounting options are available if needed.
