CDC Capacity Strategies

PPE shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic have challenged healthcare systems across the U.S. to find alternate ways to protect healthcare providers and patients while providing care.

As healthcare facilities work to determine their surge capacity, the CDC has developed a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Burn Rate Calculator to help healthcare facilities plan and optimize the use of PPE. The CDC has also developed optimization strategies that can be implemented sequentially based on PPE inventory and utilization rate to help facilities manage their supplies. The strategies are based on conventional capacity, contingency capacity and crisis capacity. To learn more about these strategies click here.

The FDA is also working to develop additional strategies to help alleviate and prevent future supply issues. They have developed a survey to receive input from clinicians about the current and anticipated state of PPE and other COVID-related supplies within their facilities.
