Innovative Devices Help Reduce Ventilator Circuit Disconnections, Enhancing Patient and Clinician Safety
There are many justified reasons for disconnecting a patient from a ventilator circuit, however, each time a disconnection occurs, patient and staff safety can be at risk.
When a patient is disconnected from and reconnected to a circuit, their positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) is not maintained, putting the patient at risk of Ventilator Induced Lung Injury due to the collapse and re-expansion of the lungs. Circuit disconnects can ruin the progress of healing a patient’s lungs.
In addition, a disconnection may expose staff to aerosolized viruses, bacteria and pharmaceuticals. Keeping the circuit closed enhances infection control.
Meet the FLUSSO™ By Pass Adapter and FLUSSO™ TFI
Advancing the way we manage ventilated patients
The Flusso By Pass Adapter and the Flusso TFI enable a patient’s PEEP to be maintained while minimizing staff exposure to exhaled aerosols during ventilator circuit disconnects.
Both are on GPO supplier agreements with Vizient and Premier through Solutions in Critical Care.
Flusso By Pass Adapter
The Flusso By Pass Adapter is designed to minimize the frequency and impact of circuit disconnections to patients and staff. The device consists of a ventilator port, a by pass port, a patient port, a tethered cap, an integrated swivel and a proprietary swing valve. The swing valve technology is designed to redirect the gas flow without interrupting the positive pressure ventilation to the patient. As gas flows through the ventilator port, the swing valve is activated, sealing off the by pass port. In reverse, as gas flows through the by pass port, the ventilator port is sealed. The swing valve provides a reliable seal, ensuring the patient’s breathing circuit remains closed at all times.

The Flusso TFI is a small, lightweight, easy-to-use device for the temporary interruption of gas flow to facilitate a safe circuit disconnection. When added to the circuit, clinical staff can easily compress the tabs to temporarily interrupt the gas flow, maintaining PEEP. This device is safer than clamping, as it won’t damage the tube. The Flusso TFI can reduce circuit disconnections for up to 18 different therapies.
